1958 C1 Corvette

1958 C1 Corvette

On a recent trip to Missouri, I had the opportunity to light paint a fabulous 1958 C1 Corvette! This stunning Tuxedo Black 58 looks striking with its Silver Coves and red interior!

Here’s the 58, all set up and ready to be light painted.

I met Karl, the Corvette’s owner while exhibiting at the Lake of the Ozarks Corvette Club Show. He and his beautiful C1 were placed right in front of my light painting booth for the whole show! What a tease!

I enjoyed Karl’s baby so much that I selected his C1 as my “Photographers Choice Award” and presented him with a gift certificate at the awards ceremony at the show. And just a couple of nights later, he and I created his light painting project together.

A Bit of History About Karl’s 1958 Corvette

According to Karl, there were 9,168 Corvettes made in 1958. A total of 493 of them were Tuxedo Black with Silver Coves and red interiors.

Karl’s 1958 C1 Corvette no longer has its original engine. A 1965, 327 Corvette Engine was put in it years ago. Karl estimates that it was fully restored about 20 years ago, and was kept in a climate-controlled garage. It was driven only on Sundays. He bought it two years ago, and still keeps it in a climate-controlled garage. He too, pretty much drives it only on Sundays. And, of course, to car shows!

Light Painting a 1958 C1 Corvette at Lake of the Ozarks

If you’ve ever been to the Lake of the Ozarks area, you’ll see many interesting rock formations along the roadways. The Ozark Plateaus are primarily limestone and dolomite, with some shale, sandstone, and chert also present.

During both of my visits to The Ozarks over the past two years, I knew that it would look pretty cool to create a light painting featuring these cool natural features in the image. Since light painting photography is all about bringing out the details, these rock formations would look fantastic in a light painting!

The day before the light painting session, I was driving around looking for a location for his project and I found this spot. After showing it to Karl, he agreed that it would look pretty cool. So his 58 Corvette would be the first one to use these geological features in a light painting project. I kind of hope it’s not the last one either.

Two Is Even Better Than One!

Here’s what the interior looked like before light painting.

Once we completed the light painting of the whole car, I suggested that we try another one featuring the car’s wonderful red interior. Karl was game, so we took a crack at it! While we didn’t have a daylight photo to use as the base image, I think it still turned out very cool! That red interior just pops, and the Silver Cove lets you know that this is most certainly a Corvette!

Light Painting a 1958 C1 Corvette – The Movie

As always, I’ve created a short “Build Video” of the whole car light painting. It begins with the images that I used in the final project. Then you’ll see the whole one-of-a-kind project come to life, one layer at a time! It’s only about a minute long and fun to watch, so please check it out!
