The Class of 2016!

Jared was the first of two back to back senior portrait sessions in Stillwater last Friday afternoon. I met Jered and his mom MariBeth in downtown Stillwater at the famous Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop. Leo’s is right there before you cross the (also famous) Stillwater Lift Bridge over the St. Croix River to head over to Wisconsin.

Last Friday was really a beautiful day! After days and days of rain, it finally dried out and we were left with a beautiful sunny, reasonably warm day here in our Minnesota springtime. While a sunny day isn’t a photographers dream day, it does beat an all-day rain, that’s for sure!

A little color, a little B&W.

Jared, MariBeth and I walked around downtown Stillwater looking for cool backgrounds (in the shade) to create his senior portraits. I really like creating high school senior portraits in Stillwater (kids portraits, engagement and wedding photos too), it’s just a neat town with lots of character and charm.

Friday was great in another way weather-wise. The strong winds that we had on Saturday and Sunday were nonexistent last Friday. That allowed me to use a medium sized softbox on a light stand without fear of it blowing over. Anytime I can add light to a portrait it’s going to make it that much better, especially noticeable in the eyes. When the light source can be larger, it’s even better!

During Jared’s high school senior portraits in Stillwater, we walked down near the St. Croix River and got some nice images with the Stillwater Lift Bridge and some with the St. Croix River in the background too.

I had been in Stillwater just the Sunday before working on a personal project that I’ll be sharing with you when it’s complete in a few months. In just 5 days the St. Croix River had to have risen at least 4 feet with all of the rain we just received. One road that I just drove on that Sunday was closed due to high water. That’s a lot of rain!
