Light Painting a 2018 ZL1 1LE Camaro
Joannie and I are very excited to share the story about a cool light-painted photograph of a red-hot 2018 ZL1 1LE Camaro. We created this pretty image for Sandra on a recent week-long light painting trip.
On this whirlwind trip, we drove 970 miles and created six unique light paintings along the way! We ended up in five different towns in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin!

Here’s the camera setup. You can see what will be captured on the screen of our iPad Pro. We use the iPad Pro to wirelessly trigger the camera and to get feedback on each exposure.
“On The Road Again”
We began in Carlton, Minnesota for this cool project. The next night, we were in Superior, Wisconsin to light paint a 2008 Ford Shelby Mustang. The Shelby was paired up with the oldest vehicle we’ve ever light-painted, a 1915 Model T Ford! Then, the next day, we traveled up to Meadowlands, Minnesota for a nine-car light painting project (all muscle cars)!
We weren’t done yet! The following evening, we headed to Ladysmith, Wisconsin to create an amazing 3-vehicle light-painted photograph that you’re going to love! We concluded this trip with two pretty light paintings of an amazing 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner in Washburn, Wisconsin!
Motorhead Madness in Duluth, Minnesota
Sandra’s ZL1 1 LE Camaro light painting would be our first cool project. Sandra commissioned us to create this image for her at Motorhead Madness in Duluth, Minnesota back in March.

We had a nice view from our room at The Inn on Lake Superior (although we weren’t there very much)! Here’s the diesel-powered lake freighter, the John J Boland leaving the Duluth harbor, with lots of seagulls escorting it.
A few weeks after the show, I contacted her about scheduling her project. In addition to Sandra’s project, I was able to line up the other light painting projects mentioned above.
Since all of them would be created outdoors, the chances of actually getting them completed would be up to Mother Nature. It was a long shot, but remarkably, we did get them all photographed on this trip (it wasn’t without some real challenges from the weather)!

Here’s the actual base image photo of the Camaro. All we needed was for it to get dark out so we could begin light painting.
Light Painting a 2018 ZL1 1LE Camaro in Jay Cooke State Park
When we arrived in Duluth, Joannie and I had lunch at our favorite restaurant, the Duluth Grill (that place is amazing!). Then, we met up with Sandra, and her friend, Scott, to check out possible locations to create her light painting project. After going to several spots that afternoon, we decided on a pretty overlook along Highway 210 in Jay Cooke State Park.
That evening, we met up with Sandra and Scott and followed them to Jay Cooke to set up everything about an hour before sunset. Mother Nature gave us an interesting sunset that night. I love the way it enhances the look of Sandra’s sleek Mosaic Black Metallic 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE!
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is the racing version of the ZL1. It is known for its enhanced performance and aerodynamics and features a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 engine that produces 650 horsepower. The 1LE package adds a longer front splitter, dive planes, a larger rear wing, and upgraded suspension for increased downforce to grip the road. This is one hot automobile!
2018 ZL1 1LE Camaro – The Movie
As always, we’ve got a short “Build Video” on our YouTube channel. It begins with all of the images that we used to create Sandra’s one-of-a-kind light-painted photograph. Then, you’ll see the final artwork come to life, one piece at a time, using Photoshop and other programs. The link is below.
As we mentioned at the beginning of this story, this is just the first of six light paintings we created in just one week! I can’t wait to get started on the next one, a 2008 Ford Shelby Mustang with a 1915 Ford Model T! We’ll certainly be sharing it with you once it is completed. The others will follow.
If you love what you see here, we have an entire Light Painting website that can be found at www.MichaelAndersonLightPainting.com. It’s full of other cool light painting subjects. Please check it out!
