Simple and beautiful.

Pretty Colby Lake Park Engagement Portraits

This was my first time creating Colby Lake Park engagement photos. Joannie & I were at Colby Lake Park once before in October of 2013 during Pete & Lauren’s wedding day on another pretty fall afternoon. We still have some of Pete and Lauren’s beautiful wedding images we created there in our wedding galleries!

On this Thursday afternoon, I met Charlie & Colleen at Colby Lake Park. I arrived straight from creating Tony & Tessa’s engagement portraits at Aamodt’s Apple Farm in Stillwater, MN. A busy day for sure, but lot’s of fun too!

A quiet moment.

As the day went on, the temperatures were going down and the wind was cranking up making it somewhat challenging. It was becoming tough to not only keep warm but to keep Colleen’s hair in place. Thankfully for Charlie & Colleen’s Colby Lake Park engagement pictures, we could move to a less windy part of the park for most of their engagement session.

Time To Break Out The Big Glass

Colby Lake Park is a beautiful city park in Woodbury, MN with lots of pretty walking trails and a large fishing dock. That’s where the wind really made it’s presence felt. The long walking trails were a perfect place to use our Tamron SP 150-600MM F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens. The ideal lens to really compress and soften the backgrounds and bring that fishing dock into play from well across the lake as well!

Kissing in the wind!

I’ve found that even though I can handhold that lens, it’s sometimes better to use something to brace myself if I’m going to use it for an extended period of time. I ended up using the Tamron almost their entire engagement session. Thankfully I brought along our Manfrotto 628B Monopod. Because the wind made it pretty challenging to hold that lens steady at up to 600mm even with the monopod.

Incredible fall colors!

Charlie & Colleen’s Colby Lake Park engagement portraits began (and ended) at that fishing dock. We discovered right away that we would have to find some shelter from the breeze on this blustery Thursday afternoon. In getting out of the wind, we could get much better images (hair wise) and not turn into human popsicles!

So after our somewhat mildly successful attempt at the dock, we headed to the leeward side of the lake and that was much, much better! That’s where Charlie & Colleen’s Colby Lake Park engagement portraits really started to shine. Colby Lake Park is simply a beautiful fall engagement portrait location! The fact that they’re a pretty cute couple had nothing to do with it. 🙂

Charlie & Colleen will be getting married in October of 2016 at the Church of the Assumption in St. Paul, MN (one of the prettiest churches in the Twin Cities and Joannie’s personal favorite). Their wedding reception will be at the brand new Mississippi Gardens in Brooklyn Park, MN! We can’t wait! – M&J
