Como Park Engagement Portraits

Linh and Dang’s Como Park Engagement Portraits

Three weeks ago, when fall was actually still here, I had the opportunity to create Linh and Dang’s pretty Como Park engagement portraits. I hadn’t had a chance to meet Dang prior to that Friday afternoon. So this gave me an opportunity to get to know this cute couple better before their wedding next July.

It was a bright and very sunny September afternoon, with very comfortable temperatures. Just a really nice day in Minnesota. I wish that great weather would have hung in for another 24 hours for Steve and Sarah’s Minnesota Zoo wedding, but unfortunately, a lot of rain was on the way overnight.

While it was a wonderful day weather wise, the sunny part makes my job pretty challenging, especially inside of the Como Park Conservatory. Any portraits done inside of the Como Park Conservatory require that you purchase a 30-minute photography permit. But the photo permit does not allow anything in there but the couple, one photographer and a camera. No lights, no tripods, no reflectors, just me and my camera. On a sunny day, that makes it very tough to get any pleasing light on anyone.

So I did the best I could inside the Como Park Conservatory, but outside in The Charlotte Partridge Ordway Japanese Garden, the lighting situation was much better. I still couldn’t use any other equipment, but at least I could have Linh and Dang in the open shade. So that’s where we really used their photography permit to our advantage. The images that we created there are really fun and pretty.

Once our photo permit expired, Linh and Dang changed outfits and we headed across the street to continue their Como Park engagement portraits with much more freedom. I broke out Lightning McQueen and a couple of other lights and we got to work creating a lot of fun engagement portraits for them, with much more control over the lighting.

Linh and Dang, well, mostly Linh, brought a bunch of fun props along, including a bicycle, a picnic basket with a blanket and a bottle of wine, a couple of dogs and a motorcycle too! All those and a few more outfits too! All in all, it was a fun afternoon creating a new friendship and some very nice Como Park engagement portraits too.
